When I upload  an image (Jellyfish.jpg) using the  Rich Text Editor, will create  a folder called  _cache with the file "_cache_image.cache" and "thumb_Jellyfish.jpg.png"???

What is that?

The image files under this folder are the thumnail images for image gallery dialog. In Cute Editor 6.x, all thumbnails are dynamically created. In RTE 8.0, we decide to create static thumbnails and use the in image gallery. By using this method, you can put thousands of image files into image gallery folder quickly without server load.

What happens when you have a web server farm? In this situation, writing a file on disk means that only one server has access to the thumbnail.

 

Also, what if you are in a situation where you are not allowed to write to disk? Can we specify an alternate storage?

When you configure the image gallery path in web server farm, you need to choose a shared folder, and use it as image gallery path. The _cache folder will be automatically created under image gallery.

RichTextEditor custom file storage example

 

In the example ,  you can specify d:\myfolder or \\server1\dir1 as the file storage

 

While the directory is not map to IIS , it use  download.ashx to access it .

 

The provider source is open , it's easy to map download.ashx?file=filename to subsite.domain.com/filename
