Is there a way to use the manual mode of the uploader but fire the upload from the code behind?

You can start upload manually using the javascript API.

 

 

You can also get the source of Start-uploading-manually.aspx from the downloaded samples.

 

In that sample , you will know how to use the CuteWebUI_AjaxUploader_OnPostback event.
