I changed the upload directory to a new (empty_ folder and response is snappy again.  since the dialog was loading in about 60milliseconds, I'm assuming the lag was due to listing the 3000+ images in the file list.

 

Is there any way to 'disable' the left half of the 'insert image' screen so it doesn't have to pull the folder contents?
