I already tried on the demo, didn't work for me. As I say it did work fine if I do right click and paste but if I do

ctrl + v it strips out the br tags.

 

did you try both method of paste (i.e. right click paste and ctrl + v)?

I typed some dummy text in note pad (not word page or not ms word) and tried to copy from there.
