Normally (and it should be like this) I agree, but becuase email clients are poor at supporting quality CSS code, the style has be applied inline, and span tags don't always react well with margin and padding - even when set to display:block

 

The idea of making them to p tags ensures that my layouts don't fall apart in Outlook etc.
