The problem seems to be with the editor .UrlType property - when set to SiteRelative, mailto: link functionality is somehow broken (see http://www.hazlewoods.co.uk/cetest.aspx ). As I said before, you can easily see the problem if you create a mailto: link then switch between normal and html views and then back again.
