Figured this one out.  Long story short, we had an httpmodule that was blocking some of the requests cuteeditor was making (and it makes a bunch!).  Once we told the httpmodule to ignore all requests going to the cuteeditor folder, it worked fine.  Thanks - your post gave me the spark I needed to find this problem.
