Support for Japanese characters in the editor

I am using Cute Editor for ASP and am running into a problem when trying to display Japanese characters. I was able to successfully change the “culture” of the editor, but the text that shows up in the main editor box does not seem to support Japanese.

Here is a (poor) screenshot of my previous editor, and the CuteSoft editor:

As you can see, the previous editor had no issue with Japanese characters. The only thing that I have used to change the characters stored in the database back to Japanese in the editor is this:

I have included this for the CuteSoft editor as well, but it doesn’t seem to work. Is a different character set being used here? Is there another problem?

These are the different character sets I’ve tried:

Shift_JIS

x-sjis

Euc-jp

x-euc-jp

x-mac-japanese

iso-2022-jp

None of those have worked so far. If someone could please help me solve this problem, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Which version of CE are you using?

No problems with that link. Although no Japanese characters are shown there.

I believe I am using version 4 of CE for ASP. I can't find where the version number is, but the zip file that I got had "CE_for_ASP_4" in the name, so I'm assuming that's the version. It was purchased not more than a couple weeks ago, so it has to be the latest version.

That link works. As I mentioned above, I'm not having a problem with the localization of the editor itself.

The problem is that if I want to populate the editor with Japanese characters (as I've pictured in the first post of this thread), it doesn't work.

I don't think I can host an example online, but the picture does all the necessary exaplaining. Our original editor shows the Japanese characters just fine. The CE shows the Japanese characters for the localization fine, but does not convert the Japanese characters in the editor itself.

This is not an editor issue.

Just put the following code in the top of your ASP pages:

<%
Response.Codepage = 65001
Response.Charset = "utf-8"
%>

That will resolve your problems.

the "Response.Codepage = 65001" line gave an error saying: " Object doesn't support this property or method: 'Response.codepage' "

And using that charset didn't work either. There seems to be some other issue at hand here..

Myself and my manager just revisited this issue, and we came up with what was wrong.

When using a Japanese operation system, the browser itself has a Language Preference. This can be accessed by:

Tools > Internet Options > Languages

For US Windows machines (for IE), the one that shows up is en-us. The problem is that for Japanese Windows, the one that shows up is ja. So no matter what you specify in the meta tag for charset, the editor won't recognize it and always garble the Japanese text. By adding the "en-us" Language to this box in Japanese Windows, it allows the editor to recognize the Japanese characters.

The charset used was windows-1252.
