Need online status and ability to receive IMs without using emedded space for Messenger

I hope you can explain the method of configuration and code needed to solve these two problems for us.  We are using Asp.net with VB and are using membership database functionality:

    1) We need the ability to identify users as an online status upon and while logged into our website without having CuteMessenger open. (Perhaps there is code that can be applied to the header or footer for this?)
    2) We need the ability to trigger a notification to a user that a message has been received so that they can open CuteMessenger and engage in further IMs

Our site requires browsing through different pages but promotes IM activity.  So we need a solution to let users be identified as online and reachable by IM as soon as they log into the site.  But in order to avoid detracting from the browsing experience, we need any visible elements on the site to be small.  An example would be the IM system in Facebook.com which uses a very small area of webpage space in the right lower corner.

    Thank you for your help.
