Get the properties of the active object

I'm using external Math editor that I want to integrate into the CE.
The Math editor generates an image, in addition the "Alt" attribute of the image contains the code that used to generate the image.
How can I pass this data, in other words I need a way to pass the "ALT" attribute to the Math editor, is there a way to detect the current selected image and get the "ALT" attribute from it?
